differences in "culture" are the key
Romney's remark is a direct assault against the religion of Multi-Culti. All cultures are supposed to be equal -- therefore, one cannot have a greater impact on economic development than the other. Romney started a potential crusade - a jihad, if you will, a religious war - against the most important dogma of modern leftism. That's very serious business. They will go after him with all they've got. He better be prepared to follow through, and vigorously, and defend his beliefs, or else they'll palinize and bork him.

Wonderful article.
A whole lot of people lived in that region since time immemorial and made nothing of it. The modern Jews, however they got there, made something of the place. It's either culture or the Jews are just superior people. No one could claim the Jews were just lucky or blessed, history long ago closed that door. (Or maybe they are lucky and blessed-those having made it through, on average-having been subjected to extra Darwinian forces and are now lucky, blessed, superior people with a functioning culture).

Accepting that it is culture and then emulating that culture seems reasonable to me, but it is apparently in some group of individual people's best interest for it to be this way. It scares me that the vast majority of people can be lead by emotional appeals in the face of an easy way out of sleeping in the dirt, but that does seem to be the way it is.

Those same seemingly universal characteristics of people so apparent there (the will to rule/desire to be ruled, intellectual laziness) scares me right here in the sanctimonious US of A.
Both sides of it.
