Funny enough, I was going to get back to you with exactly the same line of reasoning as Jorj's. I have nothing more to add to that discussion. So long as the law distinguishes a difference between marriage and civil union, then the argument boils down to "separate but equal" kind of deal. Marriage will continue as a religious institution and the legal protections you cited will be enforced as part of civil unions. I don't see the big deal about this.
