Gas Prices Post Rare, Steep Rise in July

By Jonathan Welsh July 31, 2012
blogs.wsj.com

Visits to the pump have gotten more expensive this month.

If it seems like the price of gasoline is rising quickly and at an odd time of year, that is because it is true. The average price of a gallon of regular gas in the U.S. rose 5.1% or 17 cents to $3.50 per gallon today according to auto and travel group AAA.

This marks the first monthly increase since March and the largest July increase in at least a dozen years. The average price of gas in July was $3.42 a gallon. This was the third-highest average price for July ever recorded. AAA began keeping the fuel-price data in 2000.

“Drivers nationwide saw prices reverse in July after three months of steady declines at the pump,” said AAA spokesperson Avery Ash. “Higher global oil prices and increased demand for gasoline during the busy summer driving season were the primary factors that sent pump prices higher in July.”

National average gas prices rose for 26 days in July after hitting a low for the summer of about $3.33 a gallon on July 2.

AAA said it expects gas prices for August to be flat or slightly higher. Prices should begin to decline after Labor Day as the summer driving season winds down, demand for gas decreases and refineries switch to less-expensive fuel blends.

Obama widens leads in swing states in new poll today

Interesting poll conducted jointly by Quinn/NYT and CBS.

In the first poll that only surveyed likely voters from them (which typically favors the GOP) they found that Obama has widened the gap in Penn, Ohio and Florida.

Florida: Obama edges Romney 51- 45 percent;
Ohio: Obama over Romney 50 - 44 percent;
Pennsylvania: Obama tops Romney 53 - 42 percent.

Romney has a slightly unfavorable rating, Obama slightly favorable.

The majority of voters in all 3 states also view Romney's business history as being more in it for the profits than one which would generate jobs for Americans.

Bill Nelson is also up over Mack 47-40 in Florida, that is a spot the GOP really needs.

The woman's vote is also interesting:

Florida: Obama 51 Romney 44
Ohio: Obama 58 Romney 37
Pennsylvania: Obama 59 Romney 35

Seems to me his media campaign is working.

Ted, go back to your own post and see what it looks like on your browser:

You have to pan-n-scan to read its contents.

That's because your link is too long. Yeah, SI could do better and trim the display of the hyperlink, but until then, you could do us a favor and trim it yourself.
