QNTM is the most efficient of the three DD makers in terms of dollars
sold and profits made per employee:

In Million $
Sales Profits Employees

QNTM 5320 340 6380

SEG 8940 289 11100

WDC 4178 298 13507

QNTM has the same leadership attribute in the DD sector as CSCO has in
the networking gear sector, namely, ultra efficiency. That is,
CSCO employs the smartest people in the network gear industry as does
QNTM in the DD sector. This efficiency is a piece of latent
information, rarely discussed in the WS that is obsessed with P/E and
growth both of which stem from efficiency and product quality. In
fact, when CSCO was down in May 1997, one could predict CSCO's
resurgence based on its efficiency.

Rob,
Very well said. I agree that QNTM should be perceived as more of a "storage" company than a DD comapny, and with its investment in Terastor, DLT, fast transition to MR, in the current move to GMR, it's working hard to stay on the leading edge of read/write storage technology. Their leadership in other areas differentiates them from SEG and WDC and other "disk drive makers". To spin off a storage technology would narrow the identity of either company, and position the company, rather than just a technology, to be superceded over the long term.
