I think I got that from elpolvo, moderator of the NNBM thread on SI. Amazing guy.

Bertrand Russell had a huge influence on my thinking when I was a young man. I read his entire biography which is three thick books as he lived to be 96. Russell was probably the most totally educated man of the last century. He and his brilliant sidekick Alfred North Whitehead. The two of them rewrote math with their mathematica Principia in 1916 which was the first major overhaul of math since Aristotle. Proof after proof after proof. Russell said it broke him.

Both turned to philosophy at 55 saying they could get to where they wanted to go through math.

At the end though, Russell said he found nothing.
