"why is there such a large tax credit allowed for this ?""

Cuz people with money buy legislators who write the laws.

Why can Willard give his kids $100 mil tax-free, while I can give my kids only $13K?
How can Willard have a $100M IRA?

The Slate article has been updated:

$50 deuduction

The Romneys took a whole $50 deduction for the horsey, unless in the future the horse generates income, in which case the loss can be used to offset the income just like any other business.

This is certainly one reason Romney is reluctant to release his taxes:
leftists will lie about what's in the tax returns, doing the most damage they possibly can. If their lies are later discovered, a footnote will appear on some website and barely be noticed.
