Yes, I did survive, but one can't just turn around in a sail boat and run away any faster than hull speed which was only 7.5 knots for my craft, and I only usually did around 5 or 6 knots with a really good wind no matter how well I trimmed the mains'l, because in a storm wind we need to reef the sails or get it ripped by the wind and possibly lose the mast... actually, on one occasion during an off shore race to Bimini we did lose the mast in a heavy storm... we all survived, but a crew member in another boat was very sadly lost at sea... it was a shock and a horrible thing, needless to say... GZ
