Iridium works at the south pole too. It provides global coverage. Unfortunately, Globalstar [my company] does not. Globalstar has got new satellites up, with several more to go to complete the second constellation. But they have had and continue to have various problems so they are not out of the woods yet.

Even with the complete constellation, Globalstar coverage extends only to the Arctic and Antarctic circles. They would have to build another constellation, perhaps several satellites at 10,000 km orbit, to extend coverage to oceans and poles. I'm in favour of that, but first they have to get the existing structure humming and filled with millions of subscribers which is far from the situation.
