Really? <I prefer the Iridium because it does everything the SPOT does > I didn't know that iridium does monitoring and reporting GPS position every 10 minutes to a clickable map, and you can just push a button to send a preset text message to particular people, via email.

How about that new thing, the tethering of an iPhone or similar? findmespot.ca ... later... Have now just checked Iridium and they have better than a Bluetooth connection:

Iridium AxcessPoint
Iridium AxcessPoint allows you to create a Wi-Fi hotspot by connecting to your Iridium satellite phone and establishing an Internet connection – from anywhere on the planet. With Iridium AxcessPoint connected to an Iridium phone, you are able to use your smartphones, tablets and laptops.

< SPOT might give some users a false sense of confidence in presuming the country they're in even has a search and rescue. > The same would apply to Iridium. "Oh, I'll just go out here and if I get in trouble I'll just phone home and get an emergency crew out to help" doesn't seem very intelligent thinking. In fact it's pretty much a Darwin Award thought process.

Iridium does seem to be doing well.
