Actually, it's rather condescending of you to assume that anyone with technical and/or technological concerns simply don't understand the importance of marketing. That's a ridiculous assumption. In fact, the reason Java-based solutions are going to put an end to Microsoft's monopoly position is going to have a lot to do with Big Blue's marketing muscle and the huge presense that Java has already obtained through unabashed media hype of the first order. Microsoft's DOS was as popular as it was as a direct result of the blessing of IBM. That toy operating system evolved into a useful platform for this new breed of business appliance, despite the poor design, lack of features and reknowned brittleness. It wasn't until 1992 that Microsoft has acquired the tools neccessary to fully monopolize its now dominant operating system. There isn't really any choice for software developers and there hasn't been for almost a decade: they must support Windows and they can't afford to support several platforms. Java changes all that, watch out.
