I have been using them for years, have some old ones that keep on going and were used for hours at a time compared to the WD that died that was rarely used.

Heat could be a problem, but i don't think thats what caused it.

Seagate has new Turbo Speed USB 3 drives, with 7200 RPM HDD's in them, and super slim cases. I know of a company that does video production and all they use is portable USB drives. Seagate made a commercial about that company. The fastest USB 3 drive I have is 5400 RPM.

Lots if 3.5 inch USB desktop external drives I have seen have no fans in them.

Now what about all the hard drives I have gone through on my desktop and laptops over the years? I baby my computers, no ruff handling and when I use to take my notebook to the office, it plugged into a dock and when I was finished I brought it home and turned it back on to finish work. Over the years I have gone through at least 15 drives. 3 drives this year so far. 2 USB and one notebook internal.

Mind you I have had A LOT of computers and laptops since the 80's. I have owned about 12 laptops. And countless desktops. Thats when I was making good money and heavy into computer gaming.

I spoke to WD tech support today, let them listen to the drive beeping, they are sending out a refurbished drive and letting me send this one back pre-paid so it costs me nothing.

I told them what I was using the drive for, using FRAPS to record game-play on my computer, it records 100% smooth to the USB 3 WD Passport drive.

I tired it with another USB 3 drive, Iomega, and it's jerky and hesitates at times. So not all USB 3 drives have the same read/write speeds. All my USB 3 HDD's are 5400 RPM.

They also said heat was not an issue.

FWIW.
