Many people think that if we merely raise taxes on the rich we can balance the budget in no time. That we can do it without having to cut government programs and entitlements. I think that is ludicrous

It is demonstrably ludicrous. But it is also a straw man--no one with any power believes that. Not even Democrats in DC. They offered deals of 3-1, 5-1 and then 10-1 ratios in spending cuts to increases in taxes. None of these deals were accepted by Republicans, who want all cuts, and appear to believe that we can "balance the budget in no time" with only cuts, even while leaving defense alone. That is also ludicrous, at least as ludicrous as believing that raising taxes on the wealthy alone would do it.

But the fact is, we shouldn't talk about this on this thread. It will inevitably lead to a great deal of heat and passion without accompanying enlightenment, and I wouldn't want to see that on a great thread like this. There are plenty of political threads out there for it.
