I am not sure who fleeced whom during the eighties.

I remember that a lot of US banks lost a heck of a lot of money in Latin America and it took them a decade or more to make it back via profits in the US and Europe. My impression is that US multinationals and banks on a net basis lost money in Latin America in the eighties.
