I work with algorithms all the time, though they have nothing to do with markets. Whatever capacity is built into them depends on a combination of static or dynamic inputs and some rule or rule set. These decision points are input by humans.

Just as you would not say a car drove you from point A to point B, you would not say an algorithm made a trade, even if it seems that way.

Of course, when things go wrong and you kill someone or lose $400m (Knight), you readily blame it on the car or algorithm.
