You don't have to believe government spending drives prosperity. What it drives for sure is dependency. Once somebody is dependent, they will be hurt by cuts, often severely.

Illusion of security can be sweet. It appeals to our inner baby. After a period of dependence, the government becomes the omnipotent daddy and mommy, bringing home the bacon and toys and good times. Their job is to take care of you, and to solve your problems.

I've had moments of weakness in my life when I almost wished I could believe this sh*t.
