Rich1,

Shares held in IRA accounts cannot be borrowed, since an IRA is not a margin account. If you're really paranoid, for a couple extra bucks, some firms will hold certificates in "Safekeeping". This essentially means the firm will hold an actual certificate in their vault. The certificate will then read "XYZ brokerage custodian FBO Rich1 IRA".
