Perhaps the video experts can determine from this PR piece from SHARP the significance of their advancements. Did they do their own
decoder?

OSAKA, JAPAN - Sharp Corporation, a major electronics manufacturer,
announces the introduction in Japan of a high-resolution DVD player. The
DV-S100 uses two new proprietary digital circuit technologies developed
by Sharp to reproduce subtle video images which had previously been
difficult to render clearly.

The newly developed proprietary digital circuits are --1.A "Digital
Gamma" circuit that renders color value gradations with a rich range of
brightness valuesThis new digital video technology finely brings out
subtle gradations by correcting dark areas of images while leaving
bright areas unchanged. (three patents pending)

2.A "Digital Super Picture" circuit that makes edge details stand out in
distinct contrastThis new digital technology reproduces minute aspects
of edges according to the image content. Video images come alive with
vibrant, vivid colors in the finest detail. (five patents pending)In
addition, the DV-S100 takes full advantage of the high quality of the
digital audio available from DVDs to allow users to enjoy three types of
three-dimensional digital sound:1) Dolby Digital full decoding
(reproduces the full sound field by outputting 5.1-channel Dolby Digital
sound in analog format)2) Dolby Pro Logic decoding (reproduces a
theater-like sound field by outputting five Dolby Pro Logic analog
channels)3) Virtual Surround (creates a full-perimeter QSurround sound
field using only right and left speakers)

Plus, the DV-S100's compact size of just 270 mm (10.6") (W) and 80 mm
(3.1") (H) allows it to form a smart-looking combo when combined with
mini-component stereo systems, making it ideal for personal use.
In Japan, some 500 titles of DVD software are now available and the
market for DVD players is truly beginning to take off. In addition,
demand is also increasing for home theater systems formed around Dolby
Digital sound. In response to this demand, the DV-S100 is being offered
as a digital multimedia unit to play back video and audio with a
realistic sense of presence that previously could only be experienced in
the concert hall or theater.

[ Major Features ]

[ High-Quality Video Circuitry and Functions ]

1.Proprietary Sharp "Digital Gamma" circuit renders video color
brightness levels more visible (three patents pending)The DV-S100 is
equipped with a newly developed digital video circuit designed to
enhance picture quality. Digital Gamma corrects the playback level for
areas of low brightness without affecting bright areas, resulting in
reproduction of a rich range of color depth for what would
conventionally be seen as only "black." As a result, the DV-S100 can
play back video images for easy viewing according to the viewing
environment and the video content, enabling users to enjoy vibrant,
vivid images even in brightly lit rooms.
2.
Proprietary Sharp "Digital Super Picture" circuit makes images come
alive with fine detail (five patents pending)This circuit enhances edge
details according to the image content. This proprietary adaptive
digital circuit selects and enhances low-brightness, low-amplitude, and
high-frequency components to deliver vibrant and vivid image details.
As a result, viewers can enjoy highly detailed pictures even with dim or
dark images that have a low level of detail.........................

Hagedorn is conservative in predicting the future. What I like is the information he's providing on the past. Cube is more open with info. I notice this in the Earning conferance. But they still have an 8 foot wall. The wall might be a good idea, with it's newer products. They won't tip the competition as to what's new.

My estimates had conservative elements. Gross margins will be below 55%, but over my 53%.

Cube will sell more than 10M units of VCD chips, this Q and next.
