I am starting to wonder about that myself; there is always a bunch that would rather go down in flames for the sake of ideological purity than be electable.

In fact, I'll go back to my favorite Mondale 1984 analogy yet again, when that was very much the case in the Democratic Party.

I don't believe the Republicans main goal is to actually win the election this year.

I have read some of them saying that it doesn't matter who is president over the next few years, the economy is going down in flames, and it would be better in the long run if the Democrats can be tarred with the problems rather than Republicans. The next President will be the next "Hoover," they maintain, done in by historical circumstances beyond their control.

It is possible. But I still have hope that this financial armageddon can be avoided, that we can muddle through over time. We'll see.
