The arrestee in the second photo is Garry Kasparov, ex-World Champ and considered by many to be the best chess player ever. These days he's a famous anti-Putin political activist. Here he is, being hauled away:

Chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov says he was savagely beaten by Russian police after being arrested in Moscow while protesting the sentencing of feminist punk band Pussy Riot.

“Inside the [police] van they threw me to the floor ... then they took my right leg, they push the leg to the ceiling. I now have problems with the right side of the back,” Kasparov told the Daily Beast in his first interview since being arrested Friday.

The former world chess champion said he was detained for five hours and beaten repeatedly for participating in the protest outside a Moscow court, where three members of the band Pussy Riot were convicted of hooliganism for staging a one-minute, anti-Kremlin protest inside a Russian Orthodox cathedral.
