Are the Italians, Japanese, or Greek any better? You're just griping about the way of the world. You're looking for Utopia, but that kingdom only exits in fiction. The only meaningful approach is to learn the rules of the game, and play it as best you can.

You appear to have an implicit assumption here that the houses were fairly valued when at peak, and now, somehow, an unfairly low valuation has been created.
