While the price drop off at the end of trading was disappointing, it's an unusual day -- after the holiday -- and you're right that people want to square positions for the weekend.

If British Telecom makes a bid, they won't sign a deal until after WCOM closes with MCI per the article. That means some waiting time (maybe end of the first quarter of 1998) and take-over speculators don't want to tie up money that long on a rumor.

The main thing with all of this is that it looks like GTE is IN PLAY!
