I think that Catholics pick and choose what they believe and follow.

That's true, they're called "Cafeteria" Catholics (a term for a lot of other believers too).

When it came to having to deal with the incredible number of child-molesting priests, both sides chose to ignore it. It didn't shake their faith one bit because it didn't happen in their backyard and they didn't think they needed to defend it.

A catholic won't depart from the RCC even if they're not ignoring such evil in the clergy because leaving Rome is to them a denial of Christ Himself since they're taught the Pope is the Vicar of Christ.

Most have a sense of charity and altruism. It's taught early on, which is why they might appear to be liberal as a group. But they also believe that charity starts at home - not with the government.

Out of the very few priests we had on staff at our dinky little catholic high school in the '60s, one of them was a flaming liberal who had managed to develop a cult of personality for his anti-war views. Another of the priests had such a disdain for his church's doctrine and the bible that my parents, who were sacrificing a lot for us to attend, were horrified to hear the blasphemous new teachings of his we brought home to the supper table. So, from my limited experience with the clergy of the RCC growing up (I am no longer a Roman Catholic) that video comes as a surprise. I hope he keeps the fire stoked.

Forcing Catholics to provide abortions and contraception is forcing them to commit a mortal sin and if they keep doing it, they can't receive absolution. That means their soul is lost.

You're right that's the way practicing Catholics would think, but growing up with RC kids, I know a lot of them didn't give a hoot about their religion (because you're born into it, not made one by personal choice), so for them they would not care about any eternal consequences for using any kind of birth control up to and including abortion.

I actually have hope that some of the left leaning family members will be voting for Romney this time around.

I hope you're right, but I've been keeping my optimism about the election in serious check.

I think it would be difficult to impossible to find a religion in which that comment doesn't apply to some extent.
