Very much in agreement on the SMT issue. Can remember back to my 3Com days when they were subbing out adapter cards to Solectron at a cost of $15 per board. Product was brought back in house and within a short time that same board cost $5 to build. Adds up when you are producing 100,000 boards per DAY, seven days a week!

Another topic......I know that the X-mas season is going to go along way towards padding our portfolios in CPQ at least in the short term. I am now beginning to hear about a somewhat lackluster projection for the holiday season. I haven't heard anything specific to computer purchases yet, but what is your take for this next month and when do accurate reports on the health of computer sales for X-mas begin to trickle in? As always, thanks for your expertise!

Does it make sense that you can be the low cost (sub 1000) leader and still go after the corporate enterprise market at the same time? What kind of management mindset does that take?

I think CPQ is spreading themselves too thin to take on all ends of the market. I'm not saying that they haven't done a good job despite trying to do all things to all people, but just that Wall Street is giving them to high a valuation and it will catch up with the stock eventually.
