He never apologized. He did say it was a mistake. But the closest he ever got to an apology was when he said he'd seen a lot of "white niggers" in his time ... the context being there were plenty of white ones as bad as the black ones.

Byrd didn't like Thomas because he was black, just like Marshall.

As for his "later" liberal votes, gee, southern Dems were often liberal on economic issues.
