Bay Area - I don't know details, you are probably right.

Around Boston - if you search, you can get decent 1500sq ft in 300-350K range, 2K-2.5K sq ft in 400-450K range within I-95 (128) circular in OKish suburbs. Like Woburn, maybe Waltham, etc. That's about 10 miles to city center (may be closer to jobs in Cambridge). It's harder to get something similar closer to the city. Last winter, you still could get similar deals in Medford, Melrose, maybe Winchester and Somerville if you were lucky. Currently, Medford/Melrose has ran up a bit.

Chicago - I know the situation. Have relatives there. I'd definitely buy a McMansion if I planned to live there. :)
