Sullivan makes a good point but it's typically, at least for him, overstated. He's clearly right about Ferguson and his audience.

But part of the way he keeps those elevated fees is his affiliation with Harvard and the praise he gets from fellow, still serious scholars. He's given up on the latter and will now have problems with the former. Not certain just what sorts of problems. But this sort of very serious violation of the ethical canons of the academia are not taken lightly by the vsps at Harvard, to use Krugman's very serious people in another context.
