Democrat Minnesota lawmaker in rest stop scandal says he won't drop bid
Published August 22, 2012

Associated Press

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A Minnesota Democrat who had a rest-stop sexual encounter with a 17-year-old boy says he's still running for re-election.

Democratic Rep. Kerry Gauthier told Northland's NewsCenter in Duluth on Wednesday he will let people in his district decide his political future, "rather than the political power base in St. Paul."

The 56-year-old also told the news network that he's "a better person than this incident portrayed me."

Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton says Gauthier's decision will be "destructive" for his reputation, his district, his party and the state.

Police say Gauthier admitted to engaging in oral sex with the boy after advertising on Craigslist for "no strings attached" sex. He won't face criminal charges because the boy was older than the legal age of consent and no money was exchanged.
