Romney to declare goal of North American energy independence by 2020 that almost sounds like a real issue. And the democrats are still focusing on the fact that Bush won't be at the RNC convention.

The U.S. rotary rig count was down 17 at 1,914 for the week of August 17, 2012. It is 60 rigs (3.0%) higher than last year.

The number of rotary rigs drilling for oil was down 7 at 1,425. There are 359 more rigs targeting oil than last year. Rigs drilling for oil represent 74.5 percent of all drilling activity.

Rigs directed toward natural gas were down 11 at 484. The number of rigs currently drilling for gas is 416 lower than last year's level of 900.

Year-over-year oil exploration in the U.S. is up 33.7 percent. Gas exploration is down 46.2 percent. The weekly average of crude oil spot prices is 10.2 percent higher than last year and natural gas spot prices are 30.4 percent lower. Daily crude oil and natural gas futures and spot prices are available on our site.

International rig count, which excludes the US and Canada, declined 21 to 1,264 for the month of July 2012 and is 114 rigs (9.9%) above last year's 1,150 rigs.

*The rig count for July includes 80 rigs in Iraq which has not reported rig count until June. Compared to last year without Iraq the rig count would be 1,184 and only 34 higher than last year.

The total number of rotary rigs worldwide in June was 3,516 up 32 from June and 119 (3.5%) higher than last year.
