Quite likely the share price would be higher than it is right now because traditional shareholders would be more confident that the underlying problems were solved.

The point is it WASN'T saved. Hell, any business you have $50B to can get by a while longer, regardless of what a financial mess it is.

That's what happened with GM. Taxpayers gave them a ton of money, and the UAW is in the process of sucking it dry. Once all the money is gone, then what?

They weren't saved. They got a ton of taxpayer dollars to keep them open a few years (or perhaps a few months, we don't know yet) longer. After obama is long gone the collapse will come and you nitwits will want to blame it on some Republican.
