I've often thought that if we were energy independent, then we wouldn't have to care so much about the Middle East, and by that logic, we wouldn't have to care about Israel so much either to maintain the balance of power out there.

One of the main reasons I voted for Obama back then was because of his renewable energy stance. He's done good things for renewables, but he decided to expend all his political capital on health care instead of energy independence. With that, he pretty much lost his power and has been a lame duck since. Now Mitt is talking about energy independence, which I applaud, because he's talking about an "all of the above" strategy. However, I wish he wouldn't include coal in that equation, although I think market forces including the transition to natural gas will put the nail in the coffin of coal in the short run anyway.
