Texting is a big source of revenue for carriers, and Apple is attacking that revenue stream, starting with iOS 5 and iMessage. They weren't willing to go as fast as some customers including Tumbleweed would have wanted, but for Apple, the carriers are important customers, too. As the carriers migrate to Plans that don't specifically charge a fee for sending or receiving a text message, Apple will IMO open up the App Store to more text Apps. You can see the conflict in FaceTime pricing. The technology is here but AT&T and Verizon want to overcharge for it or discourage its use.
