Why don't you get one of your daughters to explain to you the difference between:

"80% of scientists lean Dem" (what you say)
vs
"55% of scientists identify as Dem" (what the survey says)

as well as

"80% of scientists lean Dem" (what you say)
vs
"52% of scientists self-identify as liberal" (what the survey says)

Hint #1: Independents and Moderates are not Dems.
Hint #2: There are no other recent Pew surveys on the subject of scientists' and the public's views of science and technology other than the one from 2009.

Hopefully one of your daughters took a course in statistics or at least know how to correctly interpret what they are looking at. Or at least add.

Mark Twain (attributing to Disraeli): 'There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.'
