Your family or you are expected to pay for your own mission. If you can not afford it on your own the ward may help out. Even though it is supposedly god's choice where you are sent, the families that pay for their own missions are usually sent somewhere cool i.e. France. The ones the ward agrees to pay for are usually sent somewhere like South Dakota, nothing against South Dakota btw. Grew up in SLC with a very Mormon family so very familiar with their religion and quirks.
