He paid zero on his muni bonds. Do you know why? Because he loaned money to the government so it could build a bridge or tunnel. The government needed his money, so it waived the taxes on the interest he received. His overall effective rate is lower than yours and mine because his income at this stage of his life is from capital gains and muni interest. Mine is from wages, which are taxed at a higher rate. It's no mystery. And I'm quite sure he paid more tax in the past two years than you have in your entire life.
