Gaffa, Cookies are also a useful tracking mechanism. Using cookies, even though you don't know who the person is or traditional demographics, you can do a limited sort of tracking that tells you that users who are interested in "A" are also interested in "B". How much that's worth to advertisers I don't know. Still, the demographics, even with profiles, aren't as good as those provided by broadcasters and publishers and, consequently, are worth less in terms of AOL revenue.
BTW, I've gotten a few E-mails by virtue of SI posting. SI has stopped most of that but, at the time, I was posting on Y2K companies. Someone assumed that because I was bearish on Y2K companies I might be interested in buying long some BS Canadian resource company--strange logic.
