I think that Canon, Nikon and all the rest of the DSLR big boys are busy reverse engineering the software part of PureView. They have to be. Probably not just sitting on their thumbs about it, having a lawyer call Nokia about licensing instead.

And yes, it would be idiotic for Nokia to come out with a DSLR.

The issue there is mostly one of the perception of the brand not carrying over into meaningful value...

It's the scale of the market that's the point...

Nikon's annual global sales... are around $13 million U.S. dollars.

It makes more sense if you think about it in terms of the number of friends you see carrying a Nikon around, relative to the number you see carrying a smart phone...

The camera market just isn't big enough to be worth bothering about... relative to the scale of the market and the market impact in smart phones...
