but damn how do you make Windows cool?
That's the rub, and the reason I did not cancel my Nokia 808 PureView pre-order, though the whiff of W8 PureView was already in the air: I do not know how that ugly, bothersome W interface can shine, even inside a lovely, candy colored phone, even with killer PureView inside.

Symbian is far from perfect but it is familiar - cause it's much like iOS and Android - and stays nicely in the background, like it should. W is pushy and therefore obnoxiously intrusive. Hate that.

I want my toy to do what I want it to do, not the other way around.

So, no idea how W8 as such can ever be cool. None.

I get that the camera is great...

But, it might do more to help NOK pirate Nikon's low end sales than Apple or Samsung's high end sales...

And, if that's really the only market that goes for it in a big way... NOK is dead meat...

The rest, as you properly point out, re the market being more about tech fashion and the "cool factor" ?

If you're an NOK supporter, it leaves you in the awkward position of having to tout your faith in the probability that Sears or K-Mart are going to be making a bigger splash on the runways in Milan this fall than Dior, or... The Gap... LOL!!!

Microsoft and their products are a lot of things, but, "cool" and "stylish" aren't really EVER what comes to mind...

Still, there's a reason that a babe like Cheryl Tiegs would use her name in association with products at stores like Sears or K-Mart and NOT a big fashion house... because there's WAY more money in aggregate in selling the products in MASSIVE numbers at lower prices... than there is in trying to capture the top end...

That's the oddity in smart phones... and tech... where the pace of innovation is rapid, and the adoption curve issues happen at such a torrid pace... meaning both that the numbers at the top end ARE really large... but, also that there isn't really anything like a "fashion season" pace in the annual cycle, in the aggregate...

Except... Apple has carved out that niche that has their base branded... And, the fact is it is still CONSUMER tech... and the cycle really is tied to the Black Friday along with a lot of the rest of retail...
