I suspect it is more brain development than hormones.When does a baby bear look at mother and say "ciao Im out of here" Teens brains were meant to go crazy,else they would never leave the comforts of home.Teach them well as what you teach shows up again around 22 years old.The other times the brain was meant to go crazy is sex (read a couple months ago that out of wed lock births almost as high in the 1890's as today) and passionate love(meant to trick us or we would never marry)
