Knoxville attorney sanctioned for anti-Obama lawsuit By Tom Humphrey September 2, 2012 NASHVILLE — A federal judge who dismissed in June a lawsuit that sought to have President Barack Obama's name removed from the ballot in Tennessee has now imposed sanctions on Knoxville lawyer Van Irion for bringing a "frivolous" claim to court. "We are happy with the result and hope this brings an end to the ongoing litigation over President Obama's qualifications," said Gerard Stranch, an attorney for the Tennessee Democratic Party, in a news release. The lawsuit, brought by Irion on behalf of Liberty Legal Foundation and three individuals, contended that the president is not a "natural-born citizen" of the United States and thus unqualified to serve in accordance with requirements of the United States Constitution. U.S. District Court Judge S. Thomas Anderson of Memphis dismissed the lawsuit in June and last week partially granted a motion by Democrats who opposed it seeking sanctions against those who filed it. Anderson said Liberty Legal Foundation had no legal standing to bring the lawsuit and the claims within are "frivolous and without any arguable basis in law." Irion, the plaintiff's attorney, ran unsuccessfully for the 3rd Congressional District seat — he finished fourth in a primary won by Chuck Fleischmann — as a Republican in 2010 and who has been active in Tea Party causes. The judge wrote that "counsel for Plaintiff has multiplied the proceedings in this case unreasonably and vexatiously and should therefore be required to satisfy personally the attorneys' fees reasonably incurred by Defendants because of such conduct." Detroit police too busy to arrest man in killings Washington Times ^ Monday, September 03, 2012 DETROIT — A man suspected of fatally shooting two men and seriously wounding two others had to turn himself in twice before Detroit police would arrest him, authorities said. Detroit police said the 36-year-old man got into an argument at a party on Saturday, retrieved a gun and opened fire. Four people were shot, and two died. The man turned himself in at a fire station about two hours later, and fire officials called police, but no officers turned up. Police said in a statement that “due to area patrol units being busy handling high priority runs, no units were dispatched to the location.” The man eventually went to a police station, where he was arrested. Police Chief Ralph Godbee said he has ordered an investigation into why no patrol car was sent to the fire station.
