A couple of guides to installing Windows 8 to a USB connected disk. . .

Guide

Guide

I think there's an easier way.

Remove the hard disk(s) from your system, connect the USB disk, boot from the Windows 8 DVD, and run Setup. It'll put all the needed stuff on your USB disk, and more importantly, it won't alter your system's boot code.

If you leave your hard disk(s) connected, Windows 8 Setup will mess with the stuff in your booting partition. Believe me, this is not what you want.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. Be sure you have your Product Key before you start. Setup won't let you continue without it.

P.P.S. If you don't have a Product Key, you can make a Windows 8 DVD that doesn't need one.

Copy contents below (between, but not including the === lines) to a text file file

Copy the text file to the Sources folder of your Windows 8 DVD as ei.cfg

?:\Sources\ei.cfg

Burn a new Windows 8 DVD

(Of course, if you're using a thumb drive for installations, just copy the file and you're done.)
