Greg - RE: PC envy big time! - No I won't, as I've been waiting for WIN98 so that I can get two 19" monitors and absorb that radiation even faster looking at those quotes and graphs all day long!! All your points are well taken, but I just talked to my cable company in regard to cable modems and they said 'Well John, you know, we have to rebuild our entire system, so please come back to us in two years and maybe we'll have something at that time'... As for XDSL, who knows? I'd love to have more speed since I operate from home, and read about this stuff on NEWS.COM, PCWEEK.COM, INFOWORLD.COM etc. etc. on a daily basis, but my only option right now is DIRECPC. Problem with that is that it does not give solid 400k speed from what I read, and it costs 225/month just for the service for my needs. As for scanning, sure you could be right, but like I said, get that CPQ PC and plug the Visioneer Paper Port 6000 right into the printer port! DVD is also nice, but again, CD-ROM will be with us for way more than the next year! I agree with your statement about the sub 1K pc creating a whole new group of users, but I also think that many of these folks are much more PC budget conscious than many of us on SI. We seem to talk about a 1K PC as if it's popcorn, but let's face it, for most folks that is still a nice piece of change, and unless there are compelling reasons to do so, I wonder how many are going to be eager to shell out another couple grand to upgrade within a year or two?

John

PS - Yeah, yeah, I know, you're going to say USB is just around the corner for those scanners, and then what about IEE 1394 'firewire', what about digital cameras, what about push channels, what about the BX chipset, what about AGP, what about HP's 'jetsend' technology', what about Deschutes/Katmai/Merced, what about home servers, what about, what about, what about....
