No, you've got it reversed. A meter is a little less than 40 inches. 600 meters= 656 yards.

I didn't do any HS sports, but the yard events were 100, 220, 440, 880, mile. 440 = 1/4 mile. I'm a little confused by the 660/600, I don't think they did it around here. Checking in with my friend, the first hit on "660 yard record" was, amusingly, from 1915: query.nytimes.com . This page shows it being run in Minnesota in '69, though. mntrackhub.com
