I was at San Jose State when Tommy Smith, Lee Evans and John Carlos went there. I saw them run many times. Smith always said evans could best him at the 440 because he could stand more pain.

We were in full hippie mode in those days, so their black power salute at the Olympics made sense to us.

What blew my mind later in life is there was a forth runner on that team I did not know at the time and about the 4th fastest in the world I think. A short white guy named Tom who lives in my town in Alaska and we are friends. His kid and my kid are close as well.

And he does not look anything like a runner. Short guy with short legs.
