Jack, the report you are referring to at nasdaqtrader is a list of 'registered market participants' (=MP's). There are several types of MP's: market maker (M), ecn (E) and order entry (O)firms. so, when you see Datek in a share volume report e.g for INTC this doesnt mean they are acting as a market maker in INTC. BUT, one thing is really strange, DATEK is indeed listed (@nasdaqtrader) as a market participant of type M . so the questions is, is datek making a market or not. i am not sure if the list @nasdaqtrader has just errors in it or if its just a wrong usage of the terms 'market maker' and order entry firm. there are tw0 firms i know(YAMNER and PT DISCOUNT) both claim to be an order entry firm but both are listed as a MP of type M in the list.

One final general remark about DATEk.
- 'reachability' of DATEK over the internet.
after a couple of hundred trades (over 1 year) with datek i must say that i never had connection probs at all (may be just luck). i am using 3 different ISP's, so my redundancy is quite high.
what i am missing in all these discussions about connect probs to DATEK is, how are ppl make sure thats not a prob of their ISP.
- speed of orders
basically ok, sec's to 1 min. exept for 2 or 3 trades (out of 200 or 300) which unfortuantely took 10 mnutes or so.

'talking' to datek is like talking to a black whole. you'll seldom get something out of it.
Support is really terrible.
