Some of the democrats are trying to say that turning things over to the republicans is "a step backward to the last century" and that the dems will keep us moving forward. I'd really like to see the republicans attack that and start framing the democrats as wanting to go back to the 1930s.

Reading Amity Shlaes history of Roosevelt's 1930s, "The Forgotten Man," is like reading a primer on the last four years. You can't come away without seeing that - it's so vivid. Every argument and every strategy that Obama and the democrats have used was the same as Roosevelt's democrats - even down to suing anyone who didn't toe the government line. Perhaps the republicans can put together footage from the -thirties to show the regressiveness the dems want.

if obama wants to be fdr, you should read what fdr did in 1937 to cause the depression within the depression. it was called the "undistributed profits tax," and it was aimed to make any company distribute its profits rather than retain the profits. you can see in item 2 under the Summary how high this tax was on profits that were not distributed to share holders. you can see if a company retained any profits between 50K and $100K, the tax on that was 60%. so companies were punished for not giving out all their profits. thus the companies could not spend money on capital equipment, etc. (not smart, but that was fdr.)

i admit this link is for those who want details, but anyone wanting light reading on the subject can google "1937 undistributed profits tax" for other links to read.

Isn't it common belief that it was WWII, not FDR's socialist programs, that brought us out of the Great Depression?

President promises 'bold, persistent' leadership like FDR during the Great Depression

That figures, FDR rounded up American citizens and put them in concentration camps. George Bush made reparations in 1990.
