"Who cares?" Independents, mostly. The people who will decide this election. The people who look at policies - for example, the "conservative economic policies" you want to ignore, or it could be something else - and vote for someone who says he'll support those policies, regardless of political affiliation. That's how the Blue Dogs - Democrats in traditionally Republican areas - got in, and that's why they got tossed out when San Fran Nan kicked their butts and made them get in line.
