Arthur Herman has written a positive story on the industrial growth of America during the 20th century, but at least some parts of his piece are not quite accurate.

And with the introduction of direct-dial long distance in 1965, the number of such calls rose from 3 million in 1940 to 26 million in 1970.

DDD was actually introduced in 1951, when residents of Englewood and Teaneck, New Jersey, were first able to direct dial 11 cities across the U.S., using the 3-digit area code plus 7-digit number in common use today.

It is true that widespread installation of the equipment and technology needed took many years to reach critical mass.

My dad was a patent attorney with Bell Laboratories (part of AT&T in those days) during those years and was involved with several of the DDD patents.
