It would be nice if exports doubled. It would be nice if deficits came down gradually over the next 10 years. But the goals President Obama set in these spheres will probably be met if everybody in Washington carried on the status quo. They do not entail big change.

The country that exists is not on the right track. It has a completely dysfunctional political system. What was there in this speech that will make us think the next few years will be any different? America will only be governable again if there is a leader who breaks the mold and reframes the debate.

Read these two paragraphs again. (And there is nothing in the missing text indicated by the ellipses that would negate my conclusion.)

The second paragraph is nearly a 100% contradiction to the idea expressed in the first, that deficits would come down gradually over 10 years if the status quo continues to exist in Washington.

For me, it illustrates the shallowness and lack of serious thought that characterizes Brooks arguments. It all sounds good but there is no beef there.

<<Character, Not Audacity By DAVID BROOKS >>

As usual, David Brooks, the pretend Republican has it backwards. He wished Obama's speech had revealed greater audacity. IOW, he wanted Obama to be even more impudent. I think we have had enough of that already.

He tells us that Obama displayed character in his speech. How so? Was he honest? Did he show courage? Were his words a display of integrity to the American people?

The answer to all three is "No".

Obama did what Wasserman Schultz, Axlerod, Biggs and the rest of his crowd do - lie like hell.

And his sheep in the Charlotte audience fell in love once again.
