Hi Christine, No, I didn't see the documentary on the elephant lady. We still have the traditional turkey dinner. It isn't so bad if you buy some of the food prepared, like the pies and canned yams and veggies. There is a fast dessert made from drained, canned mixed fruit and baby marshmallows stirred into cool whip. There are good pre-mix stuffings that just need water. The oven does all of the work on the turkey. It's all of your fancy side dishes that take the time. We spend maybe an hour and a half preparing a really big feast. I always do the carving. I'm pretty good after doing it about 100 times. We have turkey several times a years. I could eat it every week. While I don't like the idea of killing animals either, I think that we need some meat in our diets to stay healthy. I have cut way back on red meats, and rely mostly on fish and fowl. I don't like the overcrowded conditions that these farms have, and would be willing to pay a little more if their conditions were improved. Remember that most birds would be killed by another animal if they were in the wild. At least we try to be humane, I hope. By the way, did I ever tell you about my deceased uncle who was once a trappist monk (my mother's brother)? He eventually renounced the brotherhood after about 40 years of nearly constant prayer and farm work. He wouldn't eat meat, and even wouldn't even eat milk and eggs, saying that it was wrong to steal from animals. He would always have some of my mother's cake though. She didn't tell him that it contained eggs and milk. I had to take my cat in to be put to sleep Friday. He once weighed 30 pounds, and last week he was just skin and bones. It was probably cancer. He refused food for the last 2 weeks, and finally had a hard time breathing. It was hard to watch. A couple of days ago he was breathing very rapidly after just going to the litter box. I laid down next to him and petted him to try to get him calmed down. He started purring which made his breathing more rythmic and twice gave me a love-bite on the end of my nose and stared into my eyes. He knew it was near the end. I tried to be brave as he was put to sleep, but started crying in front of the doctor and assistant. I experienced some heavy FEELINGS. Del
