I would love a cable modem also, but the technology is not ready for prime time yet. I have 3 friends that tried to get MediaOne hook ups and the technicians they sent out could not get it installed for one reason or other. They could not hook me up because I did not have an available IRQ, even though I have a 7 month old pentium pro from Gateway. They could not hook up two of my friends because they use lap-tops with docking stations.

Cable modems will not be a big revenue item for COMS in the near future. I believe their future revenue growth will come from the data-networking (switches mainly) side of the business (currently 45% of sales but growing much faster than the NIC and modem business) Quality of Service and bandwidth reservations are important options for network managers that are installing enterprise software applications by SAP and BAAN. Enterprise software sales are booming and so the demand for networking hubs, routers and switches, and remote access products will continue to be robust. 3 COM will get their share of that business.
